THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH

The historic salt pans of Marsala, on the western coast of Sicily, are one of the island's most iconic landscapes. As sunset approaches, photographers and visitors gather to watch the changing light transform the salt ponds and traditional windmills into a scene of remarkable beauty.

On the evening I captured this photograph, the conditions were perfect. The warm glow of the setting sun reflected across the still water, creating colours that seemed to change by the minute. From above, my drone revealed a perspective that simply cannot be appreciated from ground level — the unique patterns of the salt ponds, and the elegant windmills that have become symbols of this historic landscape.

Watching the sun disappear below the horizon while the sky reflected across the salt pans made it one of those unforgettable evenings that remind me why I love landscape photography — a combination of history, light and colour, captured from a viewpoint that reveals the full beauty of this remarkable place.
