THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH

Milford Sound is one of New Zealand's most iconic and photographed landscapes, so I knew that capturing it in the right light would be essential. We were up well before sunrise, making our way to the waterfront in the dark, hoping the weather would cooperate.

As dawn approached, everything began to fall into place. The first rays of sunlight broke through the clouds, illuminating Mitre Peak while soft morning light reflected across the calm waters of the fiord. It was one of those special mornings where the light, the clouds and the landscape combined perfectly — for just a few precious moments.

For me, this photograph captures the quiet beauty and grandeur of Milford Sound at the start of a new day. It reminds me that landscape photography is often about patience, planning, and being ready when nature provides the opportunity.
