THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH

Living near Mona Vale Beach, I have a strong connection with the ocean and this coastline. It is a place I know well, and I am always looking for the moments when familiar surroundings are transformed by light and changing conditions.

This photograph was captured as the sun rose behind Mona Vale Ocean Pool. What caught my attention was everything coming together at once — the warm early morning light, the structure of the pool, and the steps with seawater cascading down them. The movement of the water against the solid lines and geometry of the pool, under a rising sun, turned a place I know so well into something quite different.

That is what makes photographing the Northern Beaches so rewarding. You don't always need to travel somewhere exotic to find a great photograph — sometimes the most familiar places produce something extraordinary when the light and conditions are right. This image is a reflection of my love of the ocean, and of the place I am fortunate to call home.
