Newcastle Lighthouse is a fine-art photograph of the Newcastle coastline, where strong leading lines in the ridged sand draw the eye through the foreground to the lighthouse in the distance. It is available as a premium Australian-made canvas print in three sizes, delivered free Australia-wide.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH

This wasn't the perfect early morning for photographing Newcastle Lighthouse. The light and conditions weren't quite what I had hoped for — but sometimes a photograph comes together for a completely different reason.

What caught my attention were the lines created in the sand. The patterns and ridges formed strong leading lines that naturally drew the eye through the foreground and towards the lighthouse in the distance. Rather than letting the less-than-perfect light spoil the opportunity, I concentrated on the composition and used those lines to create depth and direction — transforming an ordinary foreground into an essential part of the photograph.

For me, this image is a good reminder that great landscape photography isn't always about perfect conditions. Sometimes it's about recognising what is in front of you and finding the composition that makes the scene work. In this case, it was the sand that made the lighthouse image.
